Assam: Actress Chetana Das's husband passes away after losing COVID-19 battle

Bimal Das and his wife Chetana had both tested positive for the coronavirus on August 28 and were admitted to the GNRC

Guwahati: Renowned Assamese actress Chetana Das's husband Bimal Das died on Thursday at Guwahati's GNRC Hospital days after testing positive for the dreaded coronavirus.

Bimal Das and his wife Chetana had both tested positive for the coronavirus on August 28 amid a booming number of cases across the Guwahati metropolitan region. Although Chetana Das recovered from the disease, her husband was not so fortunate and finally succumbed to the illness earlier in the day.

As per reports, Das had been shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital following a drop in his oxygen levels. He was also given plasma therapy by doctors in a last-ditch effort to save his life, but to no avail. After battling the viral infection for over a week, the renowned actress's husband finally breathed his last.

Das's death has been reported at a time when the number of critical cases of the virus is rising at an unprecedented rate across Assam. Add that to the increase in demand for oxygen supply, and Assam has a real problem in its hands, as the COVID-19 positive rate -- a good indicator of the severity of the outbreak in any given area -- is also on the rise.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 positivity rate in Assam has zoomed to 7.44%, while the number of cumulative cases in the state stands at 1,15,279. Out of these cases, 28,061 are still 'active.' So far, 323 persons in Assam have succumbed to the infections caused by the pathogen. While a maximum of 924 cases was detected in Kamrup (M) on Wednesday, followed by 236 in Nagaon, 213 in Dibrugarh and 200 in Baksa districts.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, taking to Twitter on Wednesday, wrote, "Alert ~ 3555 #COVID cases detected today out of 47744 tests done in the last 24 hours. Positivity Rate- 7.44%. Kamrup M- 924; Nagaon- 236; Dibrugarh- 213; Baksa- 200."
