TEZPUR: The foundation day of Assam Agricultural University (AAU) was celebrated by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Sonitpur on Friday at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra premises.

Assam Agricultural University, established in the year 1968 is the premier institution in the field of agriculture in the whole of Northeast India and is recipient of the prestigious Sardar Patel Outstanding Best Institution Award of the ICAR, New Delhi. The university has been working rigorously to bridge the gap between agriculture and allied sector to preposition the state to combat the emerging challenges in agriculture.

The foundation day programme in KVK Sonitpur was started with hosting of AAU flag by Angana Sarmah, Subject matter specialist, followed by offering tribute to the institution. Farmers from nearby villages attended the programme where Dr. Ranjit Bordoloi (Subject matter specialist, fishery science), Dr. Namita Dutta (Subject matter specialist, Soil Science), Dr. Roji Chutia (Subject matter specialist, Agronomy) interacted with them.

On this occasion, 9,000 litchi saplings were distributed among Nabamilan FPC, Nameri FPC and Agnigarh FPC of Sonitpur district with an aim to expand the litchi growing area and for nutritional security under the NEH component. Angana Sarmah delivered a lecture on raising litchi saplings in a scientific manner. The programme was attended by more than 30 farmers from nearby villages.
