NALBARI: Synchronizing with the state-wide massive drive to register a Guinness World Record for plantation of 1 crore saplings on a single day under the Amrit Brikshya Andolan, Nalbari district planted around 3 lakh saplings.

Amrit Brikshya Andolan is a special campaign envisioned by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to promote a tree-based economy in Assam and to enable people to derive economic benefits by taking ownership of these commercial trees. Besides, this campaign will contribute in increasing the forest cover in Assam in the broader term.

In the bid to ensure the implementation of this special initiative in the district, Nalbari Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka supervised the plantation drive under the Forest department throughout the district for near about 3 lakh saplings with cooperation from all government departments and all sections of the society. Members of self-help groups, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, department officials and residents of the district actively participated in the campaign and planted two saplings each in their respective official and residential premises. Besides, all educational institutions took up the drive in accordance with the guidelines ensuring 100 per cent participation of the faculties and students. Commercial plants mainly Agaru, Mohaneem, Mahgoni, Sissoo etc. were planted.

As part of the Amrit Brikshya Andolan, minister Jayanta Malla Baruah inaugurated the special plantation drive on Sunday at the VGR land near Moruwa-Madhapur New Market area under Nalbari Revenue Circle. DC Varnali Deka organized this plantation initiative for green fencing of the VGR land spreading over 31 bighas. The Moruwa-Madhupur Village Grazing Reserve will now be protected by the green fencing. Sustainability will be ensured by the planters along with local communities and PRI members too who have come forward to volunteer for the same.

Minister Mallabaruah, while speaking at the event, highlighted the long-term benefits of this massive plantation drive throughout the State as well as the special drive in Madhapur. He said that people will reap the benefits of this plantation 10-15 years from now in terms of health. He added that future generation will be thankful for this humanitarian endeavour. Besides, he talked about the rising concern over global warming throughout the world and stated that plantation can serve as the ultimate solution to this problem.
