GUWAHATI: When people become the judge, jury and executioner- in a shocking incident, one of the criminals who recently fled from police custody in Dhakuakhana, Assam's Lakhimpur district was thrashed to death by an angry mob on early Thursday.

According to reports, the victim/criminal identified as Gerejai alias Raju Baruah had escaped from the Judicial Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

However, locals caught hold of the criminal near the Kilkili River on Thursday morning and thrashed him following which the former was handed over to the police in a very critical condition.

Meanhwhile upon reaching the hospital, doctors pronounced him dead.

Gerejai reportedly escaped from police custody for the second time in a row within one year, but this time he could not defeat his death. Earlier, he escaped from a hospital in Lakhimpur even though he had a bullet wound on his leg.

The deceased was accused of committing various crimes including rape and murder.

Meanwhile, the two other criminals identified as Jatin Tamuli and Sunti Das are currently on the run.

Earlier in July, sensation over the mysterious burning of a man alive and the burial of his body by some villagers prevails at Borlalungaon village with the police arresting five persons, including three women.

The Samaguri police led by Kaliabor SDPO Mrinmoy Das arrested five persons, including three women, last night in connection with the sensational mob lynching incident. The police also recovered the victim's body. Sources claimed that the police spotted the body at midnight on Saturday and sent it to Nagaon BP Civil Hospital for a postmortem. Over 90 per cent of the body was burnt, sources said.

The arrested persons are Nareswar Bordoloi, Ratneswar Bordoloi, Bharati Bordoloi, Padumi Bordoloi and Barsha Rani Bordoloi of Borlalungaon village, police sources added.

Sources said that gruesome act had linked with the mysterious death of a newly-married woman named Sabita Pator.

The body of the woman recovered from a nearby pond a week ago, and villagers of the locality initially thought that she had died after falling into the pond.
