TAMULPUR: With the festival of lights just around the corner, artists creating earthen lamps of various shapes and sizes are working very hard to compete with as many products as possible before the festival of lights. Along with the rest of the state, the artists from Tamulpur working with such wares are also working day and night to get these items ready to sell in the Diwali market.
Diwali, the festival of lights is less than a week away and preparations are in full swing for this upcoming festival. Lights, sweets, clothes and gift sellers are busy for the festival ahead, but more than them, the artisans who make earthen lamps are busy with their work, as this is their busiest part of the year.
The people of the Palbasti village of the Binuapur locality in Tamulpur district are mainly into this line of work to create a wide variety of earthenware. Men and women of the village are now working tirelessly to complete as many earthen lamps as possible. Seemingly endless lines of earthen lamps of various sizes and shapes are in various stages of preparation. While some people are engaged in crafting them, some others are busy drying and heating them, while yet others are involved in counting and packing these items. The artisans are also engaged in producing a variety of other earthen materials needed for religious and other purposes.
It can be noted that 10-15 families of the villages have been engaged in this field of work since their great grandfathers and they continue to carry forward this tradition. The artisans however mentioned that the increase in the prices of a particular clay essential for making these earthenware has made it increasingly difficult for them to survive in this field, yet they continue to carry forward the traditions of their great grandfathers.
