GUWAHATI: On Sunday, the Assam Police made a significant drug bust in Guwahati and the neighboring Kamrup district, resulting in the apprehension of two individuals from Manipur. Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted a luxury vehicle carrying the suspects and seized drugs worth approximately Rs 18 crore. The operation was conducted by the Assam Police's Special Task Force (STF) in collaboration with the Kamrup police, following intelligence inputs about a Manipur-based narcotics group involved in drug trafficking through Assam.

According to STF Deputy Inspector General Partha Sarathi Mahanta, the police received information that a Manipur-based drug group would be transporting drugs through Assam. Early on Sunday, they received specific information that the group was traveling in a Toyota Fortuner vehicle with registration number AS 01 DT 2876 to deliver the contraband. In response, the STF team, accompanied by the Additional Superintendent of Police, pursued the suspected traffickers.

In an attempt to escape arrest, the suspects accelerated their vehicle, leading to a loss of control and a fall of approximately 100 feet down the hillock of Powa-Mecca. The vehicle was tracked down, and both the STF team and the Kamrup district police apprehended the individuals. The arrested suspects were identified as Abdul Kalam, also known as Hasan, and Mustakim.

“Accordingly, the vehicle was tracked down and an STF team along with Kamrup district police chased the team. In order to escape the police dragnet, the peddlers tried to flee the spot. In the process, the driver lost control over the vehicle and it fell around 100 ft down the hillock of Powa Makkah in Hajo," Mahanta said.

After the accident, a search of the damaged vehicle uncovered 100 soap boxes containing heroin, weighing around 1.3 kilograms. Additionally, a search of the suspects' rented house in Guwahati's Jalukbari area revealed 65 more packets of heroin, weighing approximately 900 grams. Deputy Inspector General Mahanta confirmed that the investigation was ongoing to identify other individuals associated with the drug trafficking network.

The apprehension of these suspects and the subsequent investigation is expected to provide crucial leads and insights into the larger drug network operating in Manipur and Assam. Law enforcement agencies will continue their efforts to dismantle such networks, ensuring the safety and security of the region's residents and bringing the perpetrators to justice. This operation is a testament to the cooperation between police forces in tackling drug trafficking and highlights the significance of intelligence-based operations in combating the drug menace.
