Silchar: A Silchar court granted bail to all the five persons arrested in connection with Bethukandi dyke breach that caused a massive flood in the town in the last month. Among the five persons, Nazir Hussain Laskar is a contractor attached with the Water Resources department. Others were Kabul Khan, Ripon Khan, Nitu Ahmed and Raju Deb. Though the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had ordered a CID enquiry, all the persons were arrested by Cachar police more than a month after the FIR alleging the breach of dyke was lodged with Sadar Police Station.

The arrest of Raju Deb, a former BJP cadre, triggered political debate. Raju was suspended by the district BJP during last year's Assembly election when he campaigned for former deputy speaker Dilip Paul who was denied nomination by the BJP. Paul unsuccessfully contested the election. After the arrest of Raju, district BJP in a press briefing pointed fingers at Paul alleging that everyone knew for whom Deb campaigned in the Assembly election role of his 'leader' should also be probed. Paul on the other hand filed an FIR against nine persons including a few leaders of district BJP alleging that social media posts intended to tarnish his image.

After the bail was granted, Saumen Choudhury, advocate of Raju said, police had failed to produce any document that could suggest the involvement of his client in the incident of damaging the Bethukandi dyke.
