GUWAHATI: Shrinkhal Chaliha, leader of the Bir Lachit Sena, was arrested once more on Wednesday, just hours after receiving bail. But the cause of the arrest has not been revealed by the police. Shrinkhal has a history of being detained for extortion and mistreating businessmen. Later, he was granted bail as the police were unable to produce the CCTV's hard drive as proof. It has been claimed that Shrinkhal Chaliha has threatened and abused the business community in order to get them to pay a "Chanda" and has engaged in hooliganism. Locals have demanded the Bir Lachit Sena leader's immediate arrest due to his increasing abuse of the non-Assamese business community, particularly those who are not native to the region. Chaliha was arrested near the gate of Sivasagar Jail under National Security Act (NSA). Meanwhile, he was granted bail by Sivasagar’s Chief Judicial Magistrate court on Tuesday. According to reports, Shrinkhal Chaliha went to a Sivasagar shop where he allegedly verbally abused and spit on a businessman's face before leaving. Later, the Sivasagar Police detained him and placed him under house arrest. The incident came to light after a few people started sharing the video on social media. As a result, he was put into house arrest. DGP Assam GP Singh taking on the micro-blogging site Twitter wrote, ” Reference extortion demand at Sivasagar in the name of donation for socio-cultural event - named accused person, one Shrinkhal Chaliha has been arrested and action is being taken per law. @mygovassam directions regarding Forceful collection for socio-cultural events would be strictly implemented by @assampolice” The chief cop also stated that Assam police will fully follow any instructions about the forced collecting for socio-cultural activities. The area surrounding Chaliha's home was sealed off by the police earlier, and strict security measures have been implemented. However, Chaliha was observed leaving his home on a two-wheeler a few hours after being placed under house arrest. According to the police, a full investigation will be carried out, and those found guilty will face the proper consequences. In 2021, Shrinkhal Chaliha warned to remove trespassers from government property if the Assam Government did not take the appropriate steps. Additionally, he issued warnings to those who sought to marginalize and oppress the state's indigenous population.
