GUWAHATI: Shrinkhal Chaliha, the leader of the Veer Lachit Sena, was freed from prison on Monday night after being imprisoned for nearly two months. He was re-arrested on May 3 by the police near the gate of the Sivasagar district jail under the National Security Act (NSA) after receiving a directive from the District Chief Judicial Magistrate hours after being released on bail in an extortion case.

At 11 p.m. yesterday, after more than 45 days, he was taken to his home by a police car, according to sources.

It should be noted that Shrinkhal Chaliha was detained again on May 3 under NSA, just hours after being released on bail in an extortion case.

In a prior arrest in Sivasagar for extortion and maltreatment of a businessman, Chaliha was released on bond. The Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Sivasagar granted his request for release.

In May, the members of the sociopolitical group allegedly threatened to shut down all businesses run by the non-Assamese populations in the Sivasagar district unless the Veer Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha was immediately released.

On Wednesday morning, a tense incident broke out outside the district jail after Sivasagar Police re-arrested Shrinkhal despite the fact that the court had granted him bail.

It has come to light that Shrinkhal was detained on the District Chief Judicial Magistrate's instruction in accordance with the NSA.

Notably, Shrinkhal Chaliha was detained just two days after the Sivasagar Police allegedly placed him under house arrest. He was allegedly abusing and spitting on the face of a businessman in Sivasagar in a video that appeared on social media. A group of males entered a commercial facility in Sivasagar on April 28 and got into a verbal altercation, during which the leader is said to have spit on the businessman's face before leaving the scene, according to CCTV evidence.
