Assam: BJP Leader Indrani Tahbildar’s Husband Files Case Against Anurag Chaliha, Accused Of Abetting Her Suicide

GUWAHATI: The husband of the deceased Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Kisan Morcha Secretary Indrani Tahbildar has filed a case against Anurag Chaliha for being allegedly involved in the BJP leader’s suicide case, said reports that emerged on Tuesday.

The BJP leader’s husband, Ritesh Tahbildar, filed case no. 318/2023 against prime accused Chaliha at Chandmari Police Station under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 120(B)/306/384.

Sections 120(B) of the IPC relates to anyone being party to a criminal conspiracy to commit an offence, Section 306 concerns abetment of suicide and Section 384 relates to extortion.

On Monday night, the absconding suspect Anurag Chaliha was apprehended from Demow by a joint team of the Guwahati police and Sivasagar police, for his alleged involvement in the suicide case of Indrani Tahbildar. Soon after his arrest, Chaliha was taken to Guwahati from Sivasagar.

It should be mentioned here that Indrani is alleged to have committed suicide on August 11, purportedly after intimate photos with a member of the BJP’s Kisan Morcha from Golaghat district went viral on social media.

Police sources had revealed that the Indrani allegedly committed suicide by consuming an overdose of sleeping pills on August 11. The incident was reported later that day at around 5.30 pm.

Suspicions arose that the said BJP Kisan Morcha leader was involved in an extra-marital affair with Chaliha, who was reportedly staying at her residence as a tenant.

Following the revelation of the suspicions, the BJP’s Assam unit expelled Anurag Chaliha, an invitee member of the BJP’s Kisan Morcha, from the party’s primary membership on August 12, a day after BJP Kisan Morcha Secretary Indrani Tahbildar allegedly committed suicide.

BJP state president Bhabesh Kalita took the decision to expel Chaliha from the primary membership of the party for his alleged involvement in the controversy that surrounded the suicide of Indrani Tahbildar.

Assam Police sources later revealed that Indrani Tahbildar had been suffering from acute stress disorder for the past couple of months and was habitually consuming sleeping tablets.

During the investigation into her death, the police recovered a box full of sleeping pills near her dead body at her residence in Guwahati.

It was also estimated that the deceased purportedly consumed more than 60 sleeping pills in an apparent bid to commit suicide.

The police also came across a few clues concerning the death of the BJP leader, in which her alleged lover Anurag Chaliha is suspected to have played a substantial role.

The police sources also informed that Chaliha stood accused of embezzlement of over 10 crores of rupees and had allegedly duped several job aspirants over the past several months on the pretext of giving them jobs.

In addition to this, Chaliha was also alleged to be involved in running liquor businesses and acted as an intermediary in procuring government projects with the help of Indrani.

It also came to light that Chaliha was recently accosted by some unknown individuals from whom he had reportedly borrowed crores of rupees citing various reasons. They are reported to have taken away his mobile phone, wrist watch, and later began blackmailing him with intimate images featuring him with the BJP Kisan Morcha Leader Indrani Tahbildar.

It was soon after this that the objectionable photos of the two went viral on social media platforms, leading to the tragedy that claimed Indrani’s life.
