Assam: BJP Wins In Deori Autonomous Council Polls

The BJP emerged as the single largest party in the Deori Autonomous Council Polls by winning in 12 constituencies in the 22-member strong Council spread across six districts and four subdivisions of some other districts of the state.

GUWAHATI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came out with flying colours in the Deori Autonomous Council polls, the results of which were declared on Thursday.

The BJP emerged as the single largest party by winning in 12 seats in the 22-member council.

It may be mentioned here that the voting for the Deori Autonomous Council took place on Tuesday and the counting of votes was done on Thursday as per the schedule issued by Assam State Election Commission.

The 22 Constituencies are spread across six districts apart from four subdivisions of other districts.

As per a statement issued by the Assam State Election Commission, Congress won in 2 seats, Jannayak Janta Party in 7 and an independent candidate emerged victorious in one constituency.

As many as 43,595 voters exercised their franchise which amounted to a 80% voter turnout percentage in the voting that took place on Tuesday across 93 polling stations for the 22-member autonomous council.

Out of the total electorate who exercised their franchise, 21,412 are male and 22,183 are women.

Notably, a total of 75 candidates were in fray among whom the BJP fielded the most number of 18 candidates for the polls. BJP's number was followed by the Congress who fielded candidates in 14 constituencies. The other parties that fielded candidates were Asom Gana Parishad in 4, Raijor Dal in 2, Assam Jatiya Parishad in 1 and as many as 29 independent candidates.

For the BJP, it was the ninth win for the party in any election in Assam since Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government came to power at the centre in 2014.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet thanked each voter for giving the BJP a considerable mandate and also the party workers for their support.

"The resounding victory of BJP & allies in Deori Autonomous Council election revalidates popular trust in our Government guided by vision of Adarniya PM Shri Narendra Modi ji. My deep gratitude to voters of Council area for giving us this huge mandate. I thank each party worker," tweeted CM Sarma.
