So far, several government officials have been caught red-handed while accepting bribes in the last few months.

On Wednesday, a special court sentenced Debeswar Talukdar, who was nabbed while taking a bribe, to four years of rigorous imprisonment.

Talukdar, a senior assistant of the state's transport department, was fined Rs 18,000 and the court also ordered that on the failure to pay the fine, he would be kept in prison for two extra months.

He was caught red-handed by the sleuths of vigilance and anti-corruption on December 7, 2015, from his office at Khanapara.

As per the police, Talukdar was trapped by the anti-corruption personnel after he demanded Rs 38,000 for issuing an 'assurance certificate' - which is required to procure a road permit - from a person whose identity was not disclosed.

Notably, at that time the normal fee for the certificate was Rs 800.

The anti-corruption sleuths found Rs 7,09,440 from various files lying on Talukdar's table. His residence was also searched in the evening.

The police filed a charge sheet after the investigation and the charges were framed on September 18, 2018.
