GUWAHATI: On Wednesday night, Guwahati was in a state of heightened tension due to a suspected bomb-filled suitcase. Sources claim that the event occurred at Zoo Road, where a bag was believed to have been abandoned on the Sundarpur sidewalk for a number of days.
After the incident, the city police increased security in the area starting at 11 p.m. and conducted a bomb squad and sniffer dog search. Surjeet Singh Panesar, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), was also in the area. A rescue van assisted in transporting the bag around 3.30 pm to the Home Guard Training Center in Panikhaiti.
The police did not comment on what was inside the bag or what happened to it after it was transferred to the training center, thus it is unknown if it contained a bomb or something else. According to sources, the training centre also prohibited media access.
Earlier, serial explosions set off by militants tore through four districts in India's border state of Assam on October 30, 2008, leaving up to 88 people dead and more than 500 injured. After the 1993 Mumbai bombings and the 2006 train bombings in the same city, it is still the third-largest bomb assault to have occurred in India.
An Assam court had previously upheld Ranjan Daimary's life sentence for his involvement in the bombings. Daimary had previously served as the leader of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-R). The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act resulted in the imprisonment of four of Daimary's associates for a total of 5-7 years for their part in the explosions.
