GUWAHATI: The 12 day long Assam book fair got wind up on 9th of January, Monday. This time the revenue generated was huge, and the fair was a massive success.

It registered a sale of more than Rs 5 crore book sale. The second edition welcomed publishers and booksellers from several corners of the country including, Bangladesh, New Delhi and West Bengal.

Bibliophiles in large numbers purchased books written by famous authors such as, Arundhati Roy, well known novelist Jhumpa Lahiri, works of Assamese poets and authors also were in high demand during the almost two week long book festival.

This year the fair was conducted in a collaborative manner by the Assam Publication Board and All Assam Publishers and Book Sellers Association. Initially the fair was named as Guwahati book fair, however in 2022 it was transformed into Assam book fair.

It was flagged off on 29th of December in Guwahati. Pramod Kalita, secretary of the Board stated that, due to pandemic situation in 2020, the book fair could not be organised. In 2021, even though the fair took place, the effect of covid-19 situation predominated the region. This resulted in low business.

Pramod Kalita furthers highlights the fact that massive increase in book sale was recorded this time, which indicates increasing ratio of book readers in the state.

Its a great compliment in the digital era, he added. Actual book lovers will also root to printed books over electronic gadgets, claims the secretary. 'Print will never die. One will not receive the flavour of printed books in electronic gadget', stated Kalita.
