 TINSUKIA : The 10-day 2nd Assam Book Fair got underway at Chaliha Nagar Field Tinsukia on Wednesday with lighting of the ceremonial lamp by renowned children litterateur of Rajasthan Din Dayal Sharma. Organized jointly by Publication Board and All Assam Publishers and Book Sellers Association, as many as 39 book stalls and publishers from Assam, Kolkata and Delhi have projected their display.

In his inaugural address, Sharma said the children these days are gradually losing the interest of book reading for which parents are solely responsible. The reading habits among children should be developed in tender age and this habit once inculcated remains rest of life. The books also keep away child from developing unworthy habits, said Sharma. Swapneel Paul District Commissioner Tinsukia who was present as chief guest also spoke on the occasion.

Earlier Promode Kalita, secretary of Publication Board while welcoming the guests said that the book fair was organized in a short notice and had to be shifted from Lakhimpur due to some problems. Sumanta Chaliha, vice-chairman of Publication Board in his long deliberation pointed out the works being undertaken presently including translation jobs on renowned personalities of Assam in various languages. The 10-day event will feature workshops, kabi sanmalan, day of children, literary programme on tea tribes, writer-reader convention, doctor-literature interaction etc. The organiser also announced that the book-lovers who purchase books worth Rs 1000 and above will be issued coupons on which a lottery would be drawn with a prize money of Rs 1 lakh on the last day of the fair.
