GUWAHATI: Adding another feather to their cap, Border Security Force (BSF) troops near the India-Bangladesh International Border in Assam seized a huge consignment of Yaba tablets worth an estimated Rs 1.70 crore.
On the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, BSF stopped and searched an Alto car, which resulted in the seizure of 17,000 Yaba tablets and arrest of the driver.
The BSF troops reportedly acted on a specific intelligence tip received by them regarding the Yaba tablets being transported in a white Alto car on the Katigorah-Kalain Road on National Highway-6 . The vehicle was known to be headed towards the Meghalaya side when it was intercepted. Acting on the input, BSF Field Intelligence Unit in Silchar launched a joint operation along with Operations Team and the Karimganj Customs Division.
The narcotic tablets were found stashed in a total of 89 small packets, comprising 68 blue and 21 black packets, inside the car. It is estimated that each tablet costs around Rs 1,000 in the illegal market.
The hoard of narcotic tablets was found concealed inside the left back door of the Alto car, according to the BSF.
The BSF also informed that the seizure was made at a distance of 16 kms from the Border Outpost at Harinagar, and at an almost equal distance from the international border.
Yaba tablet is a crystal meth combination drug, also known as the madness drug or Nazi speed, which is ingested orally or crushed into a powder and snorted.
The seized items along with the driver were handed over to the Karimganj Customs Division for investigation and additional action.
In a similar seizure case, the Guwahati police earlier this month had seized a package containing 200 grams of heroin and 50,000 Yaba tablets and arrested a man involved in transporting the contraband worth over Rs 14 crore.
The modus operandi used was however quite novel. The accused used an ambulance to transport the narcotic drugs from Manipur to Guwahati. The final destination of the contraband was not clear.
