A party needs to win the halfway mark of 20 out of 40 seats to form the council in Bodoland. Since no party won 20 seats alone, for the first-time-ever BTC could witness a coalition rule. The General Secretary of BJP, Dilip Saikia said that the party is in talks with UPPL to form the next council in Bodoland.
BPF was an ally party of BJP since 2016. However, BJP contested against its own ally in this election.
The counting of the votes started early on Saturday morning in ten subdivisional headquarters: Kokrajhar, Chirang, Tamulpur, Gossaigaon, Bijni, Parbatjhora, Bhergaon, Mushalpur, Udalguri, and Salbari.
The BTC elections for 40 seats were held in two phases, on December 7 and 10. The first phase saw a 77 per cent voter turnout in Udalguri and Baksa districts, while the second phase saw 78.8 per cent voter turnout in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts.
Meanwhile, all the top leaders of UPPL have reportedly gathered at Hotel Lily in Guwahati. As per sources, they are all set to meet CM Sarbananda Sonowal at his residence in some time to discuss about the future course of action.
Prior to the elections, all the three prime contenders of BTC elections, namely BJP, BPF and UPPL exuded confidence in sweeping the BTC polls.
After the pandemic hit the state, this was the first time that the state held an election. The voting was earlier scheduled in April, however, it was cancelled due to the pandemic. BTC was under Governor Jagdish Mukhi's rule since April 2020.
The BTC elections results can also be seen as a precursor for Assam Assembly elections of 2021.
