Guwahati: In a major relief to persons with disabilities, the Assam cabinet has decided to grant 4% job reservations to persons with benchmark disabilities for direct recruitment to Grade I, II, III and IV posts.
The State Cabinet took this decision in its meeting held on May 7 under the chairmanship of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The initiative is taken in compliance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 and the rules were drafted by the Government of India in 2017.
The benefits of such reservations were earlier confined to promotion only in Grade III and IV posts. However, it has now been extended to all posts, including Grade I and II.
Meanwhile, the cabinet had also approved a new scheme, Mission Bhumiputra, to simplify the process of obtaining SC, ST, OBC and MOBC caste certificates. Application for all caste certificates can now be submitted through a single application, and certificates will be issued digitally and stored on DigiLocker, the Assam CM informed.
Also, the state government announced a special recruitment drive for government jobs for 84 ex-employees of the Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL).
A new multi-speciality hospital will be established in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Guwahati) and any other willing philanthropic organization, Sarma added.
