Assam Cabinet Increases Job Reservation For Differently-Abled People

GUWAHATI: The state government has taken the decision to increase reservation for divyangans (differently-abled) in case of jobs. The reservation has been increased from three per cent to four per cent.

It may be mentioned that various organisations and groups have been over the years pressing for fulfillment of various demands related to the welfare of differently-abled / specially-abled people. The Ujoni Asom Protibondhi Suraksha Parishad (UAPSP) had earlier this month submitted a memorandum to State Finance and Social Welfare Minister, Ajanta Neog demanding resolution of various problems. In the memorandum, president of the organisation, Biswabijoy Bora said that differently-able persons had been demanding resolution of their long pending demands, but the government did not take necessary action. They demanded to identify the fraud differently-abled government employees and to appoint eligible differently-abled persons in government service. The identity cards of differently-abled persons should re-examined by experienced doctors and government benefit should be provided to deserving beneficiaries.

They further demanded land allotment in municipality area, education allowance, free education in university, open university and distance education. They also demanded to 50 per cent subsidy on loan by nationalised banks.

In December last year, the District Social Welfare (DSW) department, in collaboration with the office of the Joint Director of Health Services (JDHS), Goalpara organised the first screening camp for differently-abled persons at Agia Block Primary Health Centre (BPHC) under Krishnai Balijana ICDS Project. The screening Camp was inaugurated by Dr. Abhijit Basu, JDHS, in presence of Nileswar Ray, DSWO-cum-in-charge of Balijana Krishnai ICDS project. At least five doctors, ICDS supervisors, Asha and Anganwadi workers participated in the screening camp along with many specially-abled persons.
