These bills were introduced by the education minister of the state Ranoj Pegu on the very first day of the Autumn Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday.

GUWAHATI: The Autumn Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly is now underway and a step towards the betterment of the education sector in the state, new bills have been introduced towards the establishment of multiple new universities in the state. The bills also aims to make key changes to seven of the existing universities of the state.

These bills were introduced by the education minister of the state Ranoj Pegu on the very first day of the Autumn Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday. According to sources, several existing institutions will be granted University status by this bill. These include the Sibsagar College (Autonomous), North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous), Nowgong College (Autonomous), Jagannath Borooah College (Autonomous), Gurucharan College and Bongaigaon College.

Also, amendments will be included for Gauhati University, Cotton University, Madhabdev University, Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, Assam Women’s University, Bodoland University and Assam Science and Technology University.

A repealing bill also aims to place the Assam Rajib Gandhi University of Cooperative Management will be placed at the Sibsagar University. It includes all resources and property of the university and transfers the officers and staff to Sibsagar University for the remainder of the term of services under the provisions of the Sibsagar University Act of 2023.

The Vice Chancellor of the Rajib Gandhi University of Cooperative Management will be appointed as an Advisor of the Higher Education Department under the Government of Assam for the remaining term of his office and will continue to get the benefits as he did as the Vice Chancellor.

“Six New University Bills for Bongaigaon, Nagaon, North Lakhimpur, Gurucharan, Jaganath Barua and Sivsagar University have been introduced in the Autumn Session of Assam Legislative Assembly. Seven Amendment Bills for Gauhati, Cotton, Kumar Bhaskar Varma, ASTU, Madhabdev, Bodoland and Assam Women University have been introduced. A Repealing Bill in respect of Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management has been introduced.” said the minister over social media site X.
