Assam: Case registered against ASI for 'harassing' couple

Nagaon: A married woman of Rupahihat registered a case against one police ASI working in Rupahihat PS for alleged harassment as well as physical torture on her mentally ill husband by demanding interest for a private loan taken by them from an unauthorized moneylender, sources added.

Sources claimed that ASI Afsar Uddin Ahmed of Rupahihat PS, along with a moneylender named Abdul Jalil of Rupahihat, frequently threatened as well as harassed the married woman named Eliza Rahman and her mentally ill husband, Emdadul Islam by asking interest for a loan amount of Rs 1.25 lakh which they took from Abdul Jalil for urgent medical treatment of Emdadul Islam a few months back. Significantly, the loan amount that they took had been returned by Emdadul Islam's father soon after his treatment.

In the FIR lodged, Eliza Rahman alleged that the police official concerned and the moneylender Abdul Jalil went to her house several times and demanded the interest amount for the loan. When Eliza Rahman and her husband were unable to pay the interest, ASI Afsar Uddin Ahmed took Emdadul Islam to the local Rupahihat PS and tortured him for long in the PS, for which police later had to admit Emdadul Islam in Nagaon BP Civil Hospital and then he was shifted to Tezpur Mental Hospital, she alleged in the FIR.

Following the incident, Eliza Rahman, wife of Emdadul Islam, approached the Superintendent of Police, Nagaon, Leena Doley and lodged an FIR in this regard, sources said.

Meanwhile, as per instruction of SP Doley, police registered a case (2292/22) under section of 392/325/166 Indian Penal Code in Rupahihat PS, sources added further.
