Assam: Central Institute of Technology student drowns to death in River Gaurang

KOKRAJHAR: The body of a student of Central Institute of Technology (CIT), Kokrajhar, who reportedly went missing while taking a bath in the River Gaurang on Thursday evening, was recovered on Friday morning. The body of Deepjyoti Basumatary, a fifth semester student of Food Engineering, was fished out by the search team of State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

Sources said Deepjyoti Basumatary, son of Pradip Basumatary of Simen Chapori of Dhemaji district (currently his parents stay in Maligaon, Guwahati) went to River Gaurang along with five other students of the same institution on Thursday evening at 4 pm to take bath in the river. Reportedly, he is the only child of his parents.

Visiting the incident spot, the CEM of BTC, Pramod Boro said it was unfortunate that a fifth semester student of CIT-Kokrajhar had lost his life. He expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and said there had been reports of frequent death of students of CIT, Saint Ann’s College, B.B. Engineering College in the River Gaurang every year, which had become a matter of concern. He said according to preliminary reports, students go out in the name of taking a bath in the river but many of them use addictive substances and consume alcohol and face fatal accidents. He said that he had discussed the repeated accidents in the river and it was decided to monitor the students who go to river with addictive substances.

The MLA of Kokrajhar East, Lawrence Islary, while visiting the incident site, said most of the cases of drowning in River Gaurang were reportedly for using alcohol and drugs. He said the local villagers could not identify who are students and who are youths from the locality to monitor them in the river side and thus, the authority of the respective institutions should maintain strict rules and guidelines. He also called upon parents and guardians to take restrictive measures against their children.

Last year a student of B.B. Engineering died in the River Gaurang while bathing with other friends and just two months ago, a student of Sait Ann’s College died by drowning in the same river while taking bath with his friends.
