Assam Cha Jongusthee Jatiya Mohasabha express concern over rise in child labourers

TINSUKIA : The Assam Cha Jongusthee Jatiya Mohasabha (ACJJM) has expressed serious concern over exponential rise of child labourers belonging to tea community. Many parents are forced to engage their children into child labour under obligation as parents are unable to make both ends meet due to high inflation and less labour wage.

In a memorandum to the Chief Minister, the Tinsukia district committee of ACJJM stated that with Rs 232 daily wage, the garden communities have been facing extreme hardship to run their families with proper education to their children. Most of the children are being unethically engaged in plucking of tea leaves by small tea growers, owners of bought leaf factories, nearby hotels, brick kiln factories etc. The memorandum demanded that commercial establishments close to tea gardens should install CCTV cameras to monitor engagement of child labourers. The Child Labour (Provision & Regulation) Act 1986 should be strictly enforced, the memo demanded which was submitted through District Commissioner Tinsukia by Bablu Kuldeep and Robin Kurmi, president and secretary of ACJJM Tinsukia district committee.
