Biswanath Chariali: Demanding solution to various problems of the tea garden workers the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) has called for a workers rally which they named as 'Sramik Garjan programme' (Roar of the workers) in Assam's Dibrugarh, Biswanath Chaiariali, Golaghat, and Dispur, Kamrup (M) from January 18 and to conclude on February 8.

The ACMS would hold the rally in Dibrugarh on January 18, in Biswanath Chariali on January 21, in Golaghat on January 28, after which they would hold a rally at Dispur, Kamrup (M) on February 8.

Speaking to the media, ACMS General Secretary Rupesh Gowala said," The tea garden workers are deprived of their deserving wages according to their hard works. And that is why we have raised our voice against it. We would not compromise in any condition. Until the wages of the tea garden workers increased we will keep protesting."

In the rally in Biswanath tea garden workers from Lakhimpur, Halem, Biswanath, Rangapara, Borsola, Mangaldoi, Goalpara will join. We hope a gathering of around 50 thousand workers will be seen in the programme, he added.

Apart from the increment of the wages of the workers, the ACMS demands:

1. To give ST status to around 106 cast and sub casts of the tea community of Assam.

2. To make arrangements for allotment of land to those who are landless.

3. To arrange to appoint the unemployed youths of the Tea community of Assam in the government service as per their qualification.

Notably, the community has been protesting in the state with the beginning of the year 2021. Protests are already being held demanding solutions for various problems of the tea garden workers and increment of their wages.

Earlier in October 2020, tea garden workers in Assam staged a protest against the failure of the state government to raise their wages as promised in the 2018 agreement.
