TINSUKIA: The Assam Chah Mazdoor Union (ACMS) has announced half-an-hour ceasework and demonstration programme in all tea gardens in Brahmaputra valley on May 22 in protest against the State Cabinet's decision to enhance working hours from 8 to 12 hours.

In a press release, issued by Raju Sahu, vice-president of ACMS, secretary Panitola branch of ACMS and also former Chabua MLA, it was stated that such a decision not only violated the Labour Act but also amounted to infringement of the rights and privileges of labourers, besides threatening the livelihood of several lakh workers in tea gardens.

Condemning the unilateral decision, Sahu observed that at a time when the lockdown had already cornered tea workers, the anti-labour policy allegedly designed at the behest of capitalist owners was very unfortunate.

He also demanded immediate withdrawal of the decision to increase working hours from 8 to12 hours and to maintain earlier status quo, else the ACMS would be compelled to launch more vigorous agitation in coming days.
