GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma honoured the memory of the victims of the 2008 serial blasts that rocked the state on October 30.

Through a message on the  social media platform X, CM Sarma paid his respects and extended condolences to the affected families.

In his statement, translated from Assamese, he expressed, "October 30, 2008, is a dark day in the history of Assam. On that day, many innocent people lost their lives at the hands of insurgents. Our brothers and sisters were left with deep scars for life. On this ill-fated day, we pay tribute to everyone who lost their lives prematurely and express our deepest condolences to everyone who was injured."

He also emphasized the necessity of a united fight against insurgency for the development of a peaceful and harmonious Assam. "To build a developed Assam full of peace and harmony, we have to go on a united fight against insurgency. Our government is committed to always playing an active role in this regard," he added.

The 2008 serial blasts were a tragic event, resulting in the loss of as many as 80 lives and leaving over 400 people physically disabled for life. These devastating explosions occurred on October 30, 2008, with Guwahati being one of the severely affected areas. The blasts also struck locations in Ganeshguri, Panbazaar, Kachari, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, and Bongaigaon.

The serial blasts were orchestrated by Ranjan Daimary, the founder of the now-disbanded National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB). Daimary was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the 2008 serial blasts. Since 2019, he has been serving his life sentence behind bars, following a conviction by a special court in the case related to the 2008 blasts that shook Assam.
