Assam: ‘Children below 8 years must get education in mother tongue’

JAMUGURIHAT: A day-long seminar on the topic, “Assamese medium schools and intellectual development of children” organized by Asom Adarsha Vidyalay, Borpam in the northern part of Sootea was held on Saturday in the school premises. The seminar was chaired by Gopal Das. The seminar conducted by Ripunjay Bordoloi, convener of Jatiya Adarsha Sikshya Sangshad Textbook Production and Compilation committee was attended by Khiradhar Barua, an eminent science writer, Mrinalini Devi, former vice president of Assam Sahitya Sabha and Dr Jayanta Biswa Sarma, chairman of Jatiya Adarsha Sikhya Sangshad, Rana Basista, secretary of Jatiya Adarsha Sikshya Sangshad and Lutan Sarkar, principal of Koupati HSS as panelists.

The seminar began with a welcome address offered by Nripen Bordoloi, director of Asom Adarsha Vidyalaya, Borpam. Khiradhar Barua released a handwritten magazine ‘Jonak’ and wall magazine Jonaki respectively. Addressing the session, Dr Jayanta Biswa Sarma said that children up to 8 years must be taught through their mother tongue as a medium of instruction. After 8 years children should be offered to opt for any language as a medium of instruction. It will help them in developing their intellectual capacity. He further added that the Sishu Kanan project undertaken by the Jatiya Adarsha Sikshya Sangshad has already proved that mother tongue is the best means for intellectual and mental development of a child. Mrinalini Devi, the former vice president of Asom Sahitya Sabha also spoke in favour of the vernacular medium of schools for inner development of a child. The seminar was attended by Pradip Sarma, president of Biswanath Zila Sahitya Sabha, Hiranya Hazarika, former president of Biswanath Zila Sahitya Sabha along with other dignitaries.
