Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday flagged off 83 new ambulances for 108 Mritunjoy in the presence of cabinet minister Keshab Mahanta.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, the Assam CM asserted that patients in rural and urban areas will be benefitted from these ambulances.

''Mritunjoy in presence of Cabinet colleague Shri @keshab_mahanta.

These ambulances will be beneficial for patients in rural & urban areas of Assam and aid in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in the State.'' he tweeted.

He also informed that the emergency ambulance has saved 1,86,000 lives so far.

As per Sarma, as many as 800 ambulances, including 779 Basic Life Support Surface Ambulances, 14 Advanced Life Support Surface Ambulances, and 7 Boat Ambulances, are providing emergency health transport services to the people present.

The Assam CM further said that the state government is mulling to come up with universal health insurance through Ayushman Assam for those who left out of Ayushman Bharat.

''The scheme will cover senior citizens, journalists, people without NFSS ration cards, etc.'' he added.

Last year September, Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta announced that the people of Assam will get free medical treatment of Rs. 5 lakh for free under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

The Health Minister, therefore, urged everyone to make their Ayushman Bharat card to avail the beneficiaries of this scheme.

Mahanta further informed that Assam has 27 lakh beneficiary families under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

''13.5 crore people in Assam have availed the services of this scheme,'' he added.

Health Minister Mahanta also added that not many people in Assam have made the Ayushman Bharat card yet, which is why they are not being able to avail the facilities under this scheme.

He also added that having the Ayushman Bharat card means a deposit of Rs. 5 lakh during health emergencies.
