Chief Minister Sarma had a phone conversation with GMCH Principal Dr Achyut Baishya and got appraised about the health status of the well-known painter of Assam.
CM Sarma tweeted in Assamese. This is the translation, "Got an update on the phone with GMCH Principal about the health condition of renowned painter Neel Pawan Baruah who is undergoing treatment at GMCH. His condition is stable. The authorities are taking care and doing everything necessary to make him better. Wish him a healthy recovery and good health".
The 85-year-old painter and illustrator tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday night. The authorities of GMCH said that his health condition is stable. The oxygen saturation levels are stable as well. A resident of Guwahati, Baruah is the founding artist of the Assam Fine Arts & Craft Society.
In 2012, around 87 paintings by the Neel Pawan Baruah are on display at the State Art Gallery as part of an exhibition titled 'Neel Pawan Baruah- an exhibition of paintings,' an initiative undertaken by the Nabakanta Baruah Foundation. The 87 paintings on display are a part of his collection that was composed in the last 10 to 15 years. Baruah, who is considered a genius for using unusual mediums to portray his paintings, said that he didn't want to acknowledge his paintings as abstract but what he wanted to say was that his paintings are abstract carrying a form through which an image or images are created and that exhibits an idea.
It is to be mentioned that Baruah has used Charminar cigarette packs as a medium and made the bright amber coloured cover glistens more with the forms and caricatures of figures etched in it. Not only cigarette packs, but he has also rendered dull cardboard matchboxes interesting through his artistic dexterity.
Baruah is the husband of one of Assam's best-known female singers, late Deepali Borthakur.
