GUWAHATI: Union Minister for Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju along with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Gauhati High Court Museum. 

The decision to set up a museum was taken by The High Court which serves the largest jurisdiction in terms of states in the country was taken in 2014. 

The Gauhati High Court serves four states in the north-east namely, Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. 

Gauhati High Court was established on April 5th, 1948 and since then has rendered service to the entire north-eastern region and has made many memories in this almost 75 years of existence. 

The Gauhati High Court had jurisdiction over all the seven states of the northeastern region until 2013 when Separate High Courts for Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura were opened in March 2013. 

A high court which used to serve such a huge region is bound to have many memories because of which steps were taken to memorialize all the happenings.

The museum contains an archive where the records of judgments of important cases and paraphernalia of the court are displayed. Robes, wooden gavels used by judges during hearing of cases, furniture, pens, pen-stands, typewriters, calendars, ceiling or stand fans are also in display in the museum.

Gauhati High School had initial sittings in Shillong which used to be the capital of Assam but was transferred to Gauhati on August 14, 1948. 

The museum would provide an opportunity to know the unfolding of historical developments of the high court. Speaking on the occasion a senior Judge said "We and especially the younger generation would be enlightened by the history of this court which will shed light on shaping of the legal history of the Northeast". 

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet expresssing his happiness on inaugurating the museum said, "Happy to take part in inauguration of Gauhati High Court Museum in presence of Hon Union Law Min Shri@KirenRijiju,Hon Supreme Court judges Justice Surya Kant, Justice Hrishikesh Roy & Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, Hon CJ of Gauhati HC Justice RM Chhaya among other legal luminaries.
