Assam CM Imposes Deadlines on Guwahati Flyovers

Guwahati: In order to discuss the status of the Maligaon and Zoo Road flyovers, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, recently convened a meeting with representatives from the Public Works Department- Roads (PWD - R) and contractors. These initiatives are designed to enhance the state's transport system and reduce gridlock.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Sarma stressed the importance of completing the Maligaon flyover by July 31, 2023, and the Zoo Road flyover by August 31, 2023. He also emphasized the need for strict adherence to safety measures to ensure the well-being of workers and the public.

Unfortunately, there have been incidents during the construction process where falling objects have damaged vehicles and caused injuries to commuters. In light of these mishaps, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the need for rigorous safety measures throughout the construction process to prevent further accidents.

The Maligaon flyover, located in Guwahati, aims to improve vehicle flow and reduce travel time for commuters once it is completed. Similar to this, the Zoo Road flyover will improve connectivity and reduce congestion in a different significant area of the city.

These flyover projects demonstrate the state government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and transportation networks in Assam. This, in turn, contributes to economic growth and improves the overall quality of life for residents.

Chief Minister Sarma expressed confidence in the capabilities of the PWD (R) officials and contractors and urged them to work diligently to ensure the highest standards of quality and safety during the construction process.

As the deadlines for completion approach, the Assam government will closely monitor the progress of the flyovers. The successful completion of these projects will serve as a testament to Assam's dedication to development and progress under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

On June 13, however, a second accident at the Maligaon overpass, that is still under construction, resulted in two people suffering critical injuries.Reports indicate that an iron shuttering slab fell from above, hitting two people below the flyover. Additionally, a vehicle was also damaged in the incident, and the injured individuals were promptly taken to a hospital.

This incident follows the circulation of a video on social media showing sparks from welding work falling dangerously onto vehicles passing underneath the flyover. Congress leader Gauravv Somani had shared the video on June 8, expressing concern about the lack of safety protocols at the construction site.
