GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday stated that the Assam government has introduced the Assam Cattle Preservation Bill, 2021 in the State Assembly to protect and preserve cows from slaughter in the state. The bill aims for making the cow protection law identical to other states such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka. Just like Assam cabinet decisions, earlier, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that he will raise the issue with the Assam Government as well as with the Center if the law influences transits of cattle to Meghalaya from different states.
In the meeting today, CM Sarma stated that the new bill incorporates legal provisions to control the slaughter, utilization, and transportation of cattle According to the new law for the main offense, a person can be surrendered imprisonment of up to eight years and a fine of Rs 8 lakh and for the subsequent offence, the punishment will be double the penalty.
Similarly, on Saturday, Assam CM said that the Assam cabinet decided to introduce a new department for protecting the culture and practices of people belonging to tribal and other indigenous communities. He added that the new department would guarantee that the state's indigenous population will save their faith and traditions, while offering help to them. As the new Assam bill has been introduced, the state assembly decision about the cattle preservation bill has taken the state a few steps further to develop.
