GUWAHATI: Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, took a poignant moment on Tuesday to honor the memory of India's late former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, on the anniversary of her tragic passing.

In a heartfelt post on his social media platform, CM Sarma wrote, "Remembering our former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi on her punyatithi today.” October 31 stands as a somber reminder of the day in 1984 when the nation lost its dynamic leader to a heinous act. Indira Gandhi met her untimely end at the hands of two of her own bodyguards, just five months after the tumultuous military operation known as Operation Blue Star, which was executed at the Golden Temple.

Indira Gandhi's legacy is indelible in India's political history, as she remains the country's sole female Prime Minister. Her tenure in office spanned from January 1966 to March 1977 and was later resumed from January 1980 until her unfortunate assassination in October 1984. Widely referred to as the "Iron Lady of India," she is celebrated for her remarkable achievements, which include the nationalization of banks and the abolition of privy purses for royal families, among other transformative actions.

A noteworthy anecdote reveals that veteran BJP leader and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee likened her to Goddess Durga after India's victory in the 1971 Bangladesh war, a testament to her resolute leadership. Furthermore, her global impact was recognized when she was awarded the title of 'Woman of the Millennium' in a BBC poll conducted in 1999, underscoring her enduring influence on India's history and international recognition. CM Sarma's tribute serves as a reminder of the profound mark left by this iconic figure in the annals of Indian politics.
