Guwahati:

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma pledged to the parents of a nine-year-old girl who was reportedly raped and murdered in Morigaon district a few days ago that justice would be served swiftly.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed Morigaon SP Aparna Natarajan to speed the investigation and arrest the perpetrators.

On June 20, the girl, who was from Balidunga village in the Bhuragaon police station area, was discovered dead in a jute field near the Brahmaputra River. She was accused of having been raped and murdered.

"Took stock of the ongoing investigation in the case. Instructed the SP Morigaon to expedite investigations and nab the culprits," said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, under whose leadership the Assam Police have been repeatedly arresting offenders of heinous crimes to make Assam a crime-free state.

He added: "The family should get justice fast and it should act as a deterrent against commission of a crime against women."

"Every life is precious! What happened in Bhuragaon, Morigaon to a religious minority 9-yr-old girl was very unfortunate. I met with the parents of the girl and assured them that perpetrators of this heinous crime won't be spared. We'll not tolerate such atrocities," CM Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted today.

On Friday, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, MP Dilip Saikia, Morigaon MLA Ramakanta Deuri, and Lahorighat MLA Dr. Asif Mohammad Nagar visited the victim's home and engaged with the bereaved family.

After visiting the victim's parents at Bhuragaon during the day, Assam CM informed the media that all of the criminals will be caught and given severe punishment.

In connection with the event, police have opened an investigation and arrested one suspect.

"All rape cases will be dealt with by fast-track courts and justice as per law will be ensured," Assam CM Sarma said after visiting the Bhuragaon police station alongside DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta to assess the status of the investigation.
