Lakhimpur: The much awaited Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital was inaugurated in North Lakhimpur on 15 February. The classes for MBBS have commenced in Chaboti-Chawukham in North Lakhimpur.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the medical college and dedicated it to the people of the state. Assam health minister Kesab Mahanta, Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, local MLA Manab Deka and MLA of Dhakuwakhona Naba Kumar Doley were also present to witness this landmark ocassion.

While Inaugurating the medical college, the Assam CM said that similar colleges will be set up in every district headquarters of Assam.

The CM stated that there are 24,000 villages in Assam that need two doctors and it would amount to 48,000 thousand doctors. He further asserted that the medical colleges in 24 districts of the state will produce the required number of doctors in the next 15 to 20 years.

He also added that post graduation courses will be introduced in the Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital sooner rather than later.

The CM also added that the North Lakhimpur Cancer Hospital would be inaugurated soon. He also promised that a university would be set up in North Lakhimpur by 2025.

Also, there are plans to establish a BSc nursing college and a dental college in North Lakhimpur with the CM asking the state health minister Kesab Mahanta to do the needful.

The Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital was constructed at a cost of Rs 500 crores and the entire area of the campus is spread over a massive 168 bighas of land. The LMCH happens to be the 8th medical college of Assam and it is affiliated to Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences.

The campus boosts of 514 beds, 80 ICU beds and 7 Operation Theatres. It also has facilities of MRI and CT scan with 122 interns and 66 resident doctors.

The oath of newly enrolled students was led by the Principal of LMCH, Dr. Anup Kumar Das, at the inaugural ceremony.

Earlier, the administrative building of Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science was inaugurated by the CM at Zoihing.
