GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took part in the Dussehra celebration held in Nehru Stadium of Guwahati on Wednesday, alongside large crowds assembled there. He also visited the Kachomari Ghat located in the Fancy Bazar region of the city to view and take stock of the idol immersion taking place in the location. His wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, also accompanied the CM.
Dussehra celebrations took place in North Guwahati and Nehru Stadium. The celebration in the Nehru Stadium of Guwahati also included a 3D holographic show for the entertainment of the crowds. A musical sand art show by artists Nitish Bharati & Ravan Dahan was also a part of the show along with the usual Ravan Dahan.
The Kachomari Ghat of Guwahati is the most important venue for Durga Puja idol immersion in the city of Guwahati. Located in the Fancy Bazar region of the city, this location is popular because of the ample length of straight roads nearby. This allows a huge number of viewers and religious enthusiasts to take part in the festivities. Another key reason for hosting the festivities in that location is the river depth. As the river is very shallow at that point, the current also reduces drastically.
The immersion itself takes place from boats arranged by the IWT Department. While the police personnel take care of the traffic movements in the locality, members of the NDRF and SDRF are responsible for the safety of the public. Although the police had closed the road for usual vehicular movement by the early afternoon, traffic woes caused by the festivities continued till late at night.
There were no casualties during any of the functions except a minor hiccup when a lady fall into the river Brahmaputra while watching the immersion of idols. She was immediately rescued and proper treatment was administered.
