GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a statue of the 17th-century army commander Lachit Borphukan, renowned for his role in thwarting a Mughal attempt to capture the erstwhile Ahom kingdom.

The inauguration took place at the Bir Lachit Borphukan Park in the cantonment, where a 'Shaheed Smarak' (Martyrs' Memorial) was also unveiled. The Martyrs' Memorial features a sculpture of an inverted rifle with an 'Amar Jawan' inscription. The ceremony was attended by Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita at the Narengi Military Station. Lachit Borphukan's heroism was prominently displayed during the 1671 'Battle of Saraighat,' where he successfully halted the mighty Mughal forces' attempt, led by Raja Ramsingh-I, to conquer the kingdom. In recognition of his valor, the National Defence Academy has been awarding the Lachit Borphukan Gold Medal to its best cadet annually since 1999. A statue of him was also established in the complex near Pune.
