GUWAHATI: In a significant development during the 77th Independence Day celebration at Veterinary College Field in Guwahati's Khanapara, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reaffirmed his commitment to combating social practices detrimental to women's empowerment. He disclosed that a resolute move has been made to address the issue of polygamy in the state, backed by the formation of an expert committee responsible for framing stringent legislation to curtail it.
The Chief Minister firmly stated, "To put an end to the practice of polygamy in our state, we are poised to introduce a robust legal framework in the near future." The government's proactive approach is highlighted by the constitution of an expert committee, led by Justice (Retd.) Rumi Phukan, tasked specifically with the mission of eradicating polygamy. The objective behind this initiative is to uphold the principles of gender equality and women's empowerment across all societal strata.
Another pivotal announcement was made by CM Sarma regarding the state's relentless commitment to abolishing child marriage by the year 2026. Cognizant of the detrimental impact of this practice on the lives of young girls, the Assam government had previously launched a sweeping operation against child marriage. The outcome of this operation was the apprehension of nearly 4000 individuals involved in such marriages. Building on this previous success, the government is poised to launch yet another comprehensive crackdown on child marriage in September of this year.
Earlier, an expert committee had been constituted to ascertain the legislative feasibility of the State Legislature to enact laws that would effectively curtail polygamy in Assam. After meticulous examination, the committee submitted its comprehensive report to the Chief Minister on August 6, 2023. Acknowledging the committee's findings, CM Sarma conveyed that this pivotal step brings the state closer to fostering a conducive environment for the empowerment of women, transcending divisions of caste, creed, and religion.
In summary, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has underscored his administration's proactive approach to eliminate harmful practices like polygamy and child marriage. With a keen focus on women's empowerment and gender equality, the state is taking firm steps towards creating a more inclusive and just society.
