Assam: CM’s Security Tightened After Threat Calls

SGUWAHATI: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s security has been tightened after several journalists in the state received recorded calls allegedly threatening the CM.

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, one of the founders of the US-based separatist group Sikhs for Justice, is heard on a recording that various journalists received. Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan, the Assam Inspector General (Law and Order), stated that police have not yet determined how many of individuals have received these calls.

"This message is for Assam CM Himanta Sarma. In Assam, your administration tortures both those who are detained and pro-Khalistan Sikhs by harassing and abusing them. Pay close attention, CM Sarma. Sikhs who support Khalistan are at odds with Modi and the Indian government. Stop getting involved in the matter. Through the democratic, peaceful process of a Khalistan referendum, we aspire to free Punjab from Indian occupation. You will be held liable if your administration tortures and persecutes Sikhs”, the caller in the taped message warns Sarma.

This comes after eight of Amritpal Singh's assistants, a pro-Khalistani preacher who is on the run, were transferred from Punjab to the Dibrugarh Central Prison in Assam. In response to complaints from the journalists, the Assam Police opened an investigation.

"We received an audio tape today of a man threatening Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who portrayed himself as Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. He said that the Sikh community in Assam was being unfairly harassed. Assam's Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh, stated. 

The department had already filed a complaint and Assam Police has alerted the Commissioner of Police in Guwahati as well as all district superintendents of police. 

Hiren Nath, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Special Branch, stated that Assam Police is confirming the validity of the audio clip with the federal agencies. "We have informed the Guwahati Police Commissioner and Superintendents of Police in each district," stated Hiren Nath.
