GUWAHATI: A wise initiative has been undertaken by a government college in Assam, where students are advised to work in the tea gardens in the college premises during free periods.
Tyagbir Hem Baruah College which is constructed over 33 acres of land in Sonitpur district is located at Kusumtola area which is near Jamugurihat town. The college fortunately has a tea garden, a fishery, banana groves and lemon plants.
The prime motive to let the students get engaged in the tea garden is to provide them with some sort financial assistance which in turn will help them in covering their education fees.
The initiative mainly revolves around the needy indigenous students who can earn an amount of Rs 35-40 per hour. The students basically has to pluck leaves during the free hours, which can also be considered as a part of skill development initiative.
However, the concerned authorities has not opt for any sort of government assistance regarding the same. Student engagement in the tea gardens and tea cultivation paved its way back in 2012. As per the reports, more than 800 students have been benefited by this step in the past 10 years.
Furthermore, 50 students have developed their own tea gardens after the training they received during three years in the college. The students view this particular step as a major source to boost their financial condition and become self independent.
Ajit Hazarika, the principal of Tyagbir Hem Baruah College stated that, one major cause behind this initiative is to make the student self reliant and ignore dropout due to poverty.
Even after the course of study is completed and a particular student fails to acquire a job, he or she can simply utilise the skill that are being taught in the tea gardens and start up with small scale tea garden which will help them be financially stable.
