DHEMAJI: The Education Department has decided to take disciplinary action against the principal of the Dhemaji Commerce College for allegedly being drunk inside the college campus. The order for the same was issued from the Directorate of Higher Education, Guwahati.

“ Pending drawal of Department proceeding Sri Biren Ch. Konwar, Principal In-charge of Dhemaji Commerce College, Dhemaji, District- Dhemaji is hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect.” said the order issued by the Directorate of Higher Education.

The order mentioned that during the suspension period, Biren Ch. Konwar will continue to receive a subsistence allowance as per the rules. His head quarter will be Dhemaji and he will not move out of head quarter without the approval of the competent authority.

This order was issued by the Directorate after the approval of the Government of Assam, Higher Education Department with No.370722/28, dated 1 September 2023.

The principal in charge of the college, Biren Chandra Konwar was allegedly found drunk on the college campus during college hours. A video of the principal in an inebriated state was captured and shared widely, capturing the eye of everyone including the senior officials. The incident took place last year and triggered a protest among the students of the college who demanded immediate and exemplary action against the principal. He was also reportedly served a show-cause notice for the incident.

The Director of Higher Education in Assam, Dharma Kanta Mili had said: “We have issued a showcause notice to the principal of the college. Moreover, the district commissioner has been asked to submit a report after conducting a thorough inquiry into the incident.”

“Though we have not received any communication yet from the higher education department, I have taken suo-moto cognisance of the matter and ordered a probe under an Additional District Commissioner,” Ankur Bharali, district commissioner of Dhemaji, said. “We will submit the investigation report to the higher education department within two days,” he added.
