LUMDING: A land-related conflict has arisen between the Lumding Municipal Corporation and the Railways Department leading to the department serving eviction notices for some of the households in the region.

According to local sources, the Railways Department served notices for the eviction of a total of 42 residential buildings. This development triggered panic among a section of the residents of these quarters. It can be noted that the central government has taken several steps for the development of communications in the region, including a fund of Rs 40 Cr for the development of the Lumding station. This has led to people raising questions as to how this could have happened and how was a huge amount of money utilised and why is the department moving to evict people from the houses where they have been residing for years now.

Meanwhile, the local people mentioned these incidents have raised questions regarding the intentions of the authorities regarding such incidents. They mentioned that it creates difficulties for the people especially ahead of the Durga Puja celebrations. They also added that they have been residents of the Misti Patty locality of the town for over 60-70 years and now the department is moving to remove them from their homes.

It can be noted that the conflicts between the Lumding Municipal Corporation and the Lumding Railways Authority are not a new development and even the local MLA has not been able to bring a resolution to the conflicts. In the condition when the Bharatiya Janata Party is in power at all levels, the people have questioned how they could have allowed something like this to happen.

The residents also mentioned that they will soon take up protests if the railways decide to proceed with the evictions. The local people have also approached the MLA as well as the Municipality officials regarding the same.
