Assam: Congress appoints observers ahead of state assembly elections 2021

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has appointed senior party leaders as observers for assembly polls to be held in 4 states and a Union territory.

New Delhi: In light of the upcoming Assam assembly elections, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has appointed senior observers for taking charge of the election campaigns in the state.

As per reports, the Committee has appointed Chattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, the party's general secretary Mukul Wasnik and senior leader Shakeel Ahmad Khan as senior observers for the Assam assembly polls.

It is worth mentioning that the strength of Congress has dropped from 24 to 20 in the Assam state assembly as of now.

Notably, senior Congress leader and MLA from Nazira constituency, Debabrata  Saikia will no longer serve as the leader of the opposition in Assam Assembly which has a total strength of 126 seats.

The assam assembly elections are slated to be held in April-May of this year. 

 Assembly elections are to be held in four different states this year, namely Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Pondicherry.

It is worth mentioning that the senior observers of the party will be essential in overseeing election campaign management and party co-ordination in all the states where elections are scheduled. 

Reportedly, in case of the Kerala assembly polls, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, former Goa chief minister Luizinho Faleiro and Karnataka's former deputy chief minister G Parameswara have been appointed as the senior observers.

Meanwhile in case of the assembly elections in the state of Tamil Nadu and Union Territory of Puducherry, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, former Goa chief minister Luizinho Faleiro and Karnataka's former deputy chief minister G Parameswara are entrusted with the duties and charges as observers.

Lastly, for managing the election scenes in West Bengal, senior Congress leader B K Hariprasad and Alamgir Alam, along with Punjab minister Vijay Inder Singla will take the charge of the poll observers.

According to the official communication, the party will discharge the duties of the observers in close co-ordination with AICC general secretaries and the in charges in the respective states. 

The information regarding selecting election observers for the upcoming assembly elections was also released by the party in Twitter.
