GUWAHATI: General Secretary of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee Kamrul Islam Choudhury resigned from his post on Sunday. In his letter addressed to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Choudhury cited the rudderless and confused senior leadership of APCC as the main reason for his resignation.

He also added that the state unit of Congress in Assam has no plan for the future and is existing just for the sake of it. He did not see any initiatives taken by the state unit to strengthen the hold of Congress in the state.

Choudhury also added that he and his party workers worked day in and day out for the party's upliftment from its dismal state but felt demoralized when no action was taken against the Congress MLAs who cross-voted in the recently conducted Presidential Elections, despite the senior leadership accepting it in public.

He also mentioned that even the Assam Congress President Bhupen Bora was aware of the issue of MLAs cross-voting, and had called them 'gaddar' (traitor). He added that "thousands of grass-root workers like him have given their "blood and sweat" for the party but as the leadership is confused and directionless all the hard work they had put in all these years has gone to waste.

Choudhury also tweeted his resignation by tagging Congress Assam Unit and the National Unit.

Choudhury was earlier the National Secretary of the National Student Union of India (NSUI), Congress' student wing, and president of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC).

The oldest political party of India, Congress is fading away from the political scenario all because of weak central leadership. With its "Bharat Jodo Yatra", the party is trying to regain its old position but how far will it be successful, only time would say.
