GUWAHATI: For his comments about transferring stray dogs from Maharashtra to Assam as people here enjoy dog meat, the Assam Congress has filed an FIR against Maharashtra MLA, Bacchu Kadu.

At the Dispur police station in Guwahati on Tuesday, Assam Pradesh Mahilla Congress General Secretary Banashree Gogoi filed the police report.

The complaint read: “Bacchu Kadu said that the people of Assam consume dog meat and that he was well aware of this truth when he lived in Guwahati and testified before the Maharashtra Assembly in front of the chairperson and other political members…”

“This divisive remark was made via a social media platform that went viral, which offended me as well as the Assamese people, and fostered stress between the people’, it continued.

"The accused above intentionally uttered such hate speech to disturb the pacifist Assamese people residing in various regions of India and overseas”, stated the complaint. The complaint also stated that the accused, Bacchu Kadu, had violated Article 173 (A) of the Indian Constitution.

Mira Borthakur, the president of the Assam Pradesh Mahilla Congress, said, "Mr. Bacchu Kadu has humiliated the people of Assam with his nasty statement."

What's more astonishing is that the Assam Police have said absolutely nothing about this matter, yet the same police have either travelled to Gujarat to arrest Jignesh Mevani or deported Pawan Khera and required Supreme Court intervention to free him, she added.

She also questioned Himanta Biswa Sarma's silence on the matter as the chief minister of Assam.

"The chief minister is remaining silent and has not responded to Kadu's comments in any way. We have filed a FIR, and if the police do not act, we will go before the court to request action," said Borthakur.

According to Bacchu Kadu, an independent lawmaker from Achalpur and the head of the Prahar Janshakti Party, moving all stray dogs from Maharashtra to Assam would be a viable solution to the state's canine population because Assamese people consume a lot of dog meat.

Kadu made the remarks in response to a discussion regarding the danger presented by street dogs that was initiated by MLAs Pratap Sarnaik and Atul Bhatkhalkar in the Maharashtra Legislature.
