GUWAHATI: The Congress in Assam has filed a complaint with the Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA) against the state' Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, for his purported derogatory comments against the Congress MLAs.

The Congress delegation was led by deputy Congress Legislative Party leader Rockybul Hussain, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) working presidents Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, chief whip Wajed Ali Choudhury submitted a complaint against the DGP.

During a protest of Congress leaders at Sipajhar, the chief of state police DGP Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta reportedly said that "I am a policeman. I don't care about any MLA,"

This statement infuriated the Congress leaders and has caused a whirlpool of reaction among the party leadership.

Congress Legislator from Karimganj Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha said, "If an MLA made a mistake, then he should be alone responsible for that mistake, not the rest of the brigade. What the DGP said is highly condemnable and we at Congress urge all to strictly take a stance against the DGP,".

The Congress leaders have urged the Assembly speaker to take stern action against the DGP.

The BJP-led Assam government has been facing severe backlash from the Assam Congress after the eviction drive in Sipajhar escalated to a massive clash between the protestors and the police. The Sipajhar clash had taken place on September 23 when at least 2 protestors had died due to police firing. In addition, 9 police personnel have been injured after they were attacked by the protestors with sticks and other weapons.

To facilitate a 'transparent inquiry' the Assam Congress MP Ripun Bora has demanded the immediate transfer of the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of Darrang district. Congress MP Ripun Bora also highlighted the fact that the Superintendent of Police of Darrang district is none other than the brother of the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Bora suggested that the relationship between the brothers may come in the way of a 'transparent' inquiry process.
