GUWAHATI: The Assam Congress wrote to the Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly requesting the disqualification of MLA Sherman Ali from the house.
In this regard, a body of Assam Congress representatives headed by opposition leader Debabrata Saikia submitted a letter to Assam Speaker Biswajit Daimary.
In October last year, Congress MLA Sherman Ali was suspended by the party members in Assam for violating the rules and discipline of the party and for his involvement in anti-party activities.
The Congress MLA from the Baghbar constituency has faced several issues since the last year for various reasons including his arrest and the party's action against him.
In September 2021 before his suspension from the party, Ali was arrested by Assam police for his provoking statements in connection to an eviction drive in Assam's Darrang district.
Notably, this is not the first time that the Congress party in Assam has requested to disqualify party members but there are other similar instances before.
Earlier, a delegation of Assam Congress has written to the Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary seeking disqualification of other MLAs from the party including the name of Siddique Ahmed and Sashi Kanta Das.
Both the Assam Congress MLAs Siddique Ahmed and Sashi Kanta Das were suspended by the party after the conclusion of the Rajya Sabha election held recently.
It may be mentioned that the vote of Siddique Ahmed was disqualified in the Rajya Sabha election and Sashi Kanta Das was voted as the candidate of the ruling party.
Over the past few weeks, the Assam Congress has seen major changes after former APCC president Ripun Bora resigned from the party and joined TMC (Trinamool Congress) led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
