Assam: Consignment of Bhutan-Made Liquor Seized in Tamulpur

TAMULPUR: An operation carried out against the smuggling of liquor in the state's border areas led to the capture of a consignment of Bhutan-made liquor.

The Sashastra Seema Bal and the Excise department of the state carried out a joint operation at the Tamulpur district of the state based on a tip-off. The joint team was led by Babul Baishya, comprised of personnel from the Excise Department of the government of Assam and the 64 Battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal. The operation was carried out at the Darangamela locality of the Tamulpur district. Notably, this district shares an international border with the neighbouring country of Bhutan.

This operation led to the interception of a vehicle bearing registration number AS 01 AF 2070 when it was moving contraband from Bhutan to the state. A total of 10 cartons of liquor were seized from the vehicle and a person identified as Ajay Basumatary was arrested in relation to the development. The estimated value of the captured consignment is said to be Rs 15000. The accused and the seized vehicle along with the contraband were later moved to the office of the excise department.

Previously, in a significant operation, the Special Task Force (STF) Assam conducted a successful drug bust, apprehending a total of 12 drug peddlers, including 4 women, in Guwahati city. The operation took place at the parking area of Guwahati Railway Station under the Panbazar police station. Acting on reliable information, a dedicated team from the STF carried out the operation on a Monday night. Their efforts resulted in the arrests of 12 individuals who were caught red-handed with a substantial cache of illegal drugs and related paraphernalia. The seized items included 104 vials with suspected heroin, 275 empty vials, a cash amount of Rs 45,000, 2 scooters, 5 mobile phones, and syringes with incriminating articles.
