Cotton College, which used to be the biggest academic hub in the Northeast (before it became Cotton University), was established in 1901 by Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the chief commissioner of the erstwhile British province of Assam. In 1948, it became the constituent college of Gauhati University and then that of the Cotton College State University, when the latter (CCSU) was established by an Act of the Assam Government in the year 2011. The Cotton University Act, 2017 was made to chalk out a viable solution to the problems between the college and the varsity.
