Barpeta: A local court on Friday granted bail to Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani in a case of assault on a policewoman.

The court on Thursday had reserved the order after hearing the bail plea of Mevani, who was remanded to five days of police custody in the assault case.

The court on Tuesday rejected the bail petition of Independent Gujarat MLA and Dalit activist Jignesh Mevani, and sent him to five-day police custody, a day after he was re-arrested by the Assam police on different charges, including "outraging the modesty of a woman police officer."

Barpeta Congress on Thursday also protested against the arrest of the Gujarat MLA.

The president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, Bhupen Bora, and the president of the Assam Mahila Congress, Mira Borthakur also took part in this protest.

''A lot of criminals were moving around freely in this society, but Mevani was arrested in a false case,'' Bora said.
